How Can We Help?

Shaken/Stir Phone Registration Requirements (USA)

STIR/SHAKEN is a caller ID authentication framework designed to help reduce caller ID spoofing and combat fraudulent phone calls. It allows participating voice service providers to authenticate caller ID information and verify that it has not been improperly altered during transmission.

However, STIR/SHAKEN authentication is not the same as registering your business phone numbers with call analytics providers. Business registration can help providers recognize your numbers as legitimate and reduce the risk of your outbound calls being incorrectly labeled as spam.

With STIR/SHAKEN, the caller ID is examined on the outbound call, and the phone provider attaches an encrypted certificate with an identity and trust value. The phone provider on the receiving end of the call then checks the authenticity of the call.

This is an ongoing process with the FCC, which has required registration for many voice providers as of June 2021. As a business, you can work with your phone provider to ensure your calls are STIR-registered and the caller ID name (CNAM) is accurately updated.

Rich Rosen, Fastcall CEO, recently wrote a Forbes article about steps you can take to manage the phone number used by your company.

Why Register Your Business Phone Numbers?

When your organization makes outbound calls, recipients may see a spam warning or may be less likely to answer calls from numbers they don’t recognize.

Registering your business information and phone numbers with call analytics providers helps establish your business identity and gives providers additional information to assess your calls.

Registration can help:

  • Establish business legitimacy by associating your phone numbers with your organization.
  • Reduce the risk of spam labeling by providing call analytics providers with accurate business information.
  • Improve caller identification by helping providers identify your organization and assess your phone numbers.

Registration does not guarantee that calls will always be delivered or that they will never be labeled as spam. Call labeling can also depend on calling patterns, recipient feedback, carrier policies, and other factors.
